This was absolutely unbelievable! Oliver glanced at his close friend, Ethan, before running a hand through his hair, a motion born from a lot of pent up stress. Ethan had his head ducked down awkwardly, though his grim expression gave no hint of humor. This was no joke. The boy who had been by his side since the very beginning of fourth grade year, the one who made his days a bit brighter, helped him on countless homeworks, and supported him through all his talent issues, was abandoning him. Oliver shook, his whole body seeming to spasm. One could not comprehend the thoughts running through his head.
"Look, Ollie, I know we were close, but Rachel-"
"This is because of Rachel?!" Oliver shouted, his hands curling into fists. Not that he would ever get violent, it just wasn't in the small framed boy.
"She's concerned about my image. You bring me down, Ol. I have to think about what's best for me here, at this school, you know image is everything and to make a name for myself, I have to make myself stand out."
The pain those words branded into the other boy's heart was undeniable. In reality, he should have expected this. He should have known that Ethan wouldn't want to be friends with a literal nobody for the rest of his life. He was right after all, in a school like East Haven Heights, all that mattered was reputation. This was a school where rich people sent their gifted children. This was a school that focused on their future careers, athletes, musicians, artists, actors, business owners, producers, and the list goes on. Oliver was accepted due to the fact that he is son of a huge movie producer and very popular actress. Yet, though this was the middle of sophomore year, this young boy still had yet to find the talent that marked him unique.
Why be friends with the outcast?
When students started rushing past, Oliver hurried after them, no longer feeling up to carrying a conversation. The part that stung was that Ethan didn't even try to stop him. All the events that led up to this should have been clues, but he had ignored them all. Ethan grew a bit more distant the longer he spent time with his older cousin, Rachel. Oliver should have known. His former best friend was an aspiring actor and needed to branch off and do his own thing.
So that left Oliver on his own. His parents were always trying to get him into showbiz and get him interested in all kinds of different things. They weren't terrible parents, they always made time for him and loved him dearly, just as he loved them. It was just that he didn't seem to fit in very well with the rest of his family. Even his older siblings, Gabriella, Kyler, and Winter were better off than he was. Gabby had already graduated college and was now the head of our deceased uncles business. Kyler was in his senior year in college and already a brilliant athlete - a famous soccer player, and of course there was Winter, a freshman in college and already following in their mother's footsteps. Everyone in his family did something. Except for Oliver.
The truth of it was, Oliver didn't know where he fit in yet. Though he had the support of his loved ones, Ethan's opinion had always mattered more than anything. Probably because he wasn't family and wasn't obligated to care, but he did so anyway. Now that friend was gone and he was left to his own devices. He trailed the hallways, avoiding large groups of people. He wasn't in the mood to be social. This is not your typical everyone in the school hates him story, in fact, he is rather well received and has quite a few friends, though the only close friend he had just abandoned him.
Luckily for Oliver, he managed to make it into his first class - which happened to be a Classic Literature class. He slid into his desk, close to the middle of the room because he hated being in front but sitting in back was also bothersome. Some other students were already there, chatting and laughing, appearing a lot like normal teenagers. Not that any of them would ever be considered normal, due to their heritage and obvious gifts.
He was not the only undeclared major. Yes, even though he was in high school, they had majors. It's their chosen future career field. As said, he had no idea what he was good at. There were others like him, but most of them where either rebellious of their parents, or just to shy to claim what their skillset was. Oliver felt truly talentless, a lump of coal among diamonds, even if some where still in the rough.
This is Oliver James Rhodes.

i really had fun writing it though, and playing with ideas...
